Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): A Neurotoxin Or A Harmless Food Flavor Enhancer? 0

Posted on July 02, 2009 by piter

MSGs safety for human consumption has been widely debated for well over 50 years. Some people are highly sensitive to it, while others appear not to be, and still yet, others may be and not even know they are.
Manufactured/processed monosodium glutamate is the substance in question that causes the most reactions in MSG sensitive people. So what is MSG exactly?
It is the sodium salt of the amino acid known as glutamic acid, and a form of glutamate. Glutamate occurs naturally and is found in many living things, including you. It is found in protein-containing foods such as cheese, milk, meat, vegetables, and spores (mushrooms).
When it is found in its natural unbound (unprocessed) form, and is not subjected to some sort of manufactured or fermented process, is not harmful for human or animal consumption. All forms of manufactured /processed glutamic acid contains contaminants, while the naturally occurring substance in nature does not.
Although most people connect MSG with Chinese food, few people realize how massively it is used in the processed food industry. It is present in nearly every food that is manufactured. Considering how cheap and convenient it is, food manufacturers love it because they can get away with reducing the amount of real food substances by substituting with cheap fillers, add some MSG to get a ‘morphine like’ taste punch to the food product. It also intensifies the eating experience in not only enhancing the flavor of the food, but it alters color and odor of the food as well.
The bottom line, it saves them a lot of money, it allows them to sell you an inferior food product.
MSG has no nutritional value whatsoever. Like sugar, it stimulates your taste buds, making you desire the taste so much you will keep on buying the product and keep eating it. MSG changes your perception of how a food tastes. Many experts in the field of studying its harmful effects claim that it stimulates parts of the brain to produce an addiction in much the same way as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs do.
In other words, MSG is addictive. So, even if you do not drink alcohol or smoke, eating a lot of processed food is just as addictive as drugs, in essence your trading the pleasure of drugs for this addictive substance in the food you eat.
Food manufacturers are no dummies, they know they have the FDA on their side, and they know using MSG will ensure repeat customers for them.
So, what is all the fuss about when it comes to the over use of MSG, and another closely related substance called Apartame (NutriSweet)?
In literally hundreds of diet studies done around the world, scientists can create, and replicate the inducing of obesity in laboratory animals. Mice and rats can be made obese, without increasing their food intake by giving them MSG. According to John Erb, author of “The Slow Poisoning of America”, there currently may actually be a chemical responsible for America’s obesity and diabetic epidemic, and that chemical might just be MSG.
It has been scientifically linked to obesity over and over, and has been linked to irregular and rapid heartbeat, stomach problems, depression, fatigue, and brain problems. This is only a short list, there are many others to numerous to mention in this article.
Even knowing that most people, if given a choice, do not want MSG added to their food will not stop them from putting it in anyway. Manufacturers are on to the fact that consumers are scrutinizing food labels. They have taken on great deception practices to continue its use in food products by not directly labeling MSG as MSG. It is often hidden in names such as gelatin, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, yeast extract, malted barley, and rice or brown rice syrup.
The list of names is rather long and extensive. You can find out more by reading John Erb’s book, or type in the search terms ‘neurotoxin-MSG’ on a search engine to learn more hidden names on labels disguised as MSG.
I really do not believe this is a conspiracy by corporate food companies to keep us sick, although some may argue with that way of thinking. I believe it is more connected to corporate greed than anything else. Greed in keeping millions of dollars flowing through corporate bank accounts. Can you envision a long and complicated money trail that benefits several industries besides the manufactured food business?
Another expert in the the health damaging effects of MSG saga, is Dr. Russell Blaylock. He is the author of “Exitotoxins: The Taste That Kills”. Dr. Blaylock says, “MSG basically overexcites your body cells, it over stimulates them to the point of damaging them., acting as a poison”.
Avoiding MSG altogether is going to be real hard to do, but not impossible. It could take up quite a bit of your time if you let it, and until it is banned or taken out of our food supply what can you do to avoid its harmful effects?
Cooking from scratch and starting with whole foods is one way of cutting down on getting too much of this unhealthy substance. Another way to keep manufactured/ processed free glutamic acid from binding to cell receptors, is to eat a diet high in raw (or lightly cooked) dark colored fruits and vegetables. They are loaded with antioxidants and are one of your best defenses against a build up of this toxic poison in your body.
And, even though I have not read this specifically, I think I would be rather safe in recommending it, an an increased water intake would be highly effective also. By drinking your body’s daily requirement of water will help you immensely in the flushing out process of MSG in your system.
Not to mention also, that the combination of increasing your fruit, vegetable, and water intake will go a long way in reducing many other major or minor health complaints you may currently have.
This solution is really beneficial in so many ways, you may just find it nothing short of incredible! You can also refuse to buy a lot of foods that contain MSG. That is only the real message food manufacturers will understand in the long run.

The Skinny Guys Guide to Gaining Weight 0

Posted on July 01, 2009 by piter

How would you like to learn how to gain weight fast? If the title of this article caught your attention, there is a good chance you are sick and tired of not seeing the weight on the scale budge. Most likely you just got home from the Mandarin buffet and still can’t budge the scale. You could live on McDonald’s and Pizza Delight and your Ferrari style metabolism would simply burn it off. In a world that is obsessed with losing weight – you are interested in gaining weight!

Are You Sick and Tired Of People Telling You How To Gain Weight?

It probably sounds like this:

“All you have to do is eat, eat, and eat some more to gain weight…”

“Weight gain is just a matter of eating…”

“You just gotta overload your metabolism to gain weight fast…”

“You can’t build a house without the bricks and mortar for gaining weight…”

Don’t throw me to the wolves quite yet. There is certainly truth to these statements and some of these analogies can prove quite powerful. I think I’m even guilty of preaching a few! But the problem with this advice is that it’s usually followed up with the same old regurgitated blah, blah, blah advice that only tells you what to do and does not reveal real-world, practical how-to action-steps.

If you are someone who has struggled their entire life, trying to pack on extra muscle mass and still consider yourself underweight, then you are not alone. I was once skinny and underweight myself…

People, predispositioned to skinniness, are commonly referred to as “hard gainers.” This is the cool way to label your scrawny frame despite the fact that your body turns into a Number 2 pencil when you wear yellow!

It’s Not Totally Your Fault You’re Skinny

In the skinny guy’s defense, the reality is that you have been cursed with traits like Lamborghini-type metabolism, giraffe like limbs, and the strength of a senior citizen. You have to fight with every bone in your body to do something about your small frame and to keep up to your male buddies who seem to grow muscle just by sneezing – those muscle freaks piss me off just as much you!

Even though you might think your genetic deficiencies have sentenced you to a life of frailty and surprised looks when you tell others you lift weights, I am living proof that hard gainers with very ‘muscle-unfriendly genes’ can fight back against their genetics and gain muscle weight. I defeated my skinny genetics just after college and I am about to show you four tips that helped me climb from a 149 pound weakling to a rock hard 190 pounds in six months.

Trust me, no body has worse genetics for building muscle and gaining weight than an ex-long distance runner who abused his body with 60-80 miles of running a week (for over 10 years).

Skinny Guys Must Play By A Different Set Of Rules

If you are underweight, than your first step to gaining weight is to understand that you must play by a different set up rules. I have said this before and will say it again,

“Taking advice from someone who can gain muscle weight easilyis like taking money advice from someone who inherited a fortune or is making money illegally.”

You must think outside the box and give up the excuse of being a “hard gainer.” It is time to stop listening to all the naysayers who have told you that is impossible to gain weight because of your genetics. Regardless of what you have been led to believe, you do have the potential to build an impressive physique that turns heads and even intimidates!

If you have read this far, I am guessing you are ready to longer resemble a microphone stand! You are prepared to overload your metabolism for muscle growth, to ensure you are never referred to as ‘underweight’ or ‘skinny’ ever again. Start following these simple steps and don’t be surprised if you gain an extra ten pounds of muscle weight in the next four weeks.

Simple How To Gain Weight Action Steps To Start Growing Like A Skyscraper!

1. Double It Up

One of the most practical steps you can take is to double whatever you are currently eating in the kitchen right now. If you are eating one chicken breast per meal, then cook up two. If you are only eating two slices of bread, then make it four. If you are eating one handful of nuts, then make it two. If you are using only two scoops of protein powder, then make it four.

Most likely you are only a few dozen meals short of filling out your underdeveloped body parts and attracting the attention of that sexy girl at your gym. I assume you are already in the kitchen and have the food out. So would you agree, you really have no good excuse not to shovel down a greater percentage of calories by doubling it up?

2. Live Your Life Around Food

Sure, you know that you must eat every 2-3 hours, but how well do you execute? Set your clock on a countdown timer to go off every 2 and ? hours so that you reinforce the habit of eating literally not a second late for each meal! Don’t turn off the damn beeper until you start chowing down.

Ensure you are eating your first meal within 15-30 minutes of waking up – absolutely no later. This first meal of the day should always consist of REAL food to flood your body with quality nutrients. I question anybody’s commitment to gaining weight if they are too lazy to wake up 15 minutes earlier to eat a real meal.

Lastly, don’t be surprised if you are not gaining weight if you do not find yourself spending more time preparing food, more time eating food and more time cleaning your kitchen. You should notice you are spending more time in the grocery store and you should also notice a larger grocery bill each week!

3. Use BIG Eating Equipment

If you want to bulk, then you have to eat like Hulk. Do you think Hulk eats out of a small plate, or a small bowel, or a small cup? If you are aiming to get big and huge, you are going to require large amounts of food, most likely close to double of what you are currently eating.

So get BIG eating equipment! Get a BIG cup, get a BIG bowel, and get a BIG plate. Surround yourself with BIG. Most of the time hard gainers are nothing more than “under eaters.” If you struggle to complete a meal, then a bigger serving on a bigger plate will look small!

4. Never Train Hungry

How many times have you woken up, whipped up a protein shake and than headed off to the gym? Or maybe you had a long afternoon and missed a few meals and then attempted a weight training workout after work?

I thought this was common sense to avoid, until a few of my skinny clients confessed that they were showing up for their workouts having only eaten a piece of fruit and some crackers within the entire day!

After dropping the 45-pound plate on my foot out of shock, they reassured me: they were not hungry. I sometimes screamed back, “Yeah, that’s because your metabolism is in starvation mode and shut right down, you skinny pencil neck!”

I understand that training in the morning is the only time for some, however, I recommend to aim for a minimum of at least three solid meals in your system prior to training. Or eat the biggest meal of your day immediately after your AM workout. Would you take your car out on a long trip with a half empty fuel tank? Not unless you wanted the car to die and you push it the rest of the way. So why would you take your body through a grueling training session on an empty stomach?

5. Eat Nutrient Dense Foods

Focus on caloric-rich foods that are loaded with nutrients. Avoid foods with empty calories, which means there is little or no nutrient value in the calories you are eating. Why would you consume a 500-calorie plus meal that is loaded with fat and sugar which does nothing but make you feel sluggish and soft? Instead, eat a high caloric meal loaded with slow releasing carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Here are some of the best choices:

Carbohydrates – Oatmeal, rice, breads, yams beans, potatoes, fruits and veggies.

Proteins – Steak, chicken, lean beef, cottage cheese, whole milk, eggs and salmon.

Fats – Olive oil, flax oil, avocados, nuts and peanut butter.

Extras (high calorie cheat food) – Ice cream, raisins, dried fruit and trail mix.

6. Drink A Carb And Protein Drink While You Workout

How hard is to sip on a calorie-rich drink during your weight training sessions? Simply mix up a 2:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein with one liter of water and you instantly have a few extra hundred calories per day. Now have an extra workout drink before your workout and extra workout drink after your workout and that’s easily an extra one pound per week. Only use this technique if you are weight training at a very high intensity.

7. Live the motto, “Never Stop Eating”

Did I hear you say, “But I’ll throw up if I eat all day?” Maybe… Is it necessary? Of course not. But this is a part of pushing your body’s threshold. Don’t worry, you will get used to it and your body will require more food as you gain more muscle on your body and your metabolism increases. Just think that if you are not eating, then you are not growing, and if you are not growing then you are staying the same. Is that what you want?

Conclusion

There you have it and as I promised, learning how to gain weight fast is quite simple. Executing is a whole different story. It will really come down to how truly committed you are to defeating your skinny genetics and gaining the muscular body you deserve!

Here is my promise to you. You have the ability to gain at least another ten pounds of solid weight in the next four weeks by simply applying the advice above. If you are truly committed to your goals of gaining muscle weight and no longer being known as underweight, then I believe you will rise to the challenge and take action! Are you with me?

5. Supplementation: I will put it explicitly: don’t be suckers!Don’t even touch the chemical,man-made supplements!

You can perfectly -and you should – receive all the necessary micronutrients from whole, real foods amply provided by mother nature.

A real food is something much more complex than the total of its constituents. It is a unique combination of nutrients which work synergistically to satisfy our nutritional needs in the most efficient and idoneous way.

You don’t have to part with your hard-earned money only to buy garbage that eventually will harm you!

Eat abundant quantities of vegetables and if you have some money to spare go for organics.

6. And what should my nutrition base be?

We have touched on this subject many times. Please take a look here:

FITNESS/EXERCISE:NUTRITION TO BOOST YOUR RESULTS

I will limit myself here to the biggest no-nos and yes-yes:

Supportive nutrition:biggest no-nos

-white flour

-table sugar

-high fructose corn syrup

-artificial sweeteners

-hydrogenated oils(trans fats)

-sodas and all typical sugary refreshments

-visible fat in red meats

-processed meats and fish that contain sodium nitrite. Also sausages, hot dogs and the like

- all candies and pastries

-white bread

-white pasta

-white rice

-fried oils

-margarin

-all foods that contain substantial amounts of monosodium glutamate

-all deep fried foods:French fries, potato chips, doughnuts etc. They are full with acrylamide and trans-fats

-all types of canned soups

-mayonnaise and similar oily condiments and dressings

-all commercial baked foods:biscuits,cookies,cakes,bagels,croissants etc.

Supportive nutrition:biggest yes-yes

-all kinds of vegetables in season.I eat broccoli nearly every day.

-all fruits but in moderation due to their high sugar content.Prefer to take your antioxidants from vegetables which are nutritionally denser

exceptions(you can eat more from these):cranberries and most types of berries, pomegranates.

-whole eggs:you can eat at least two yolks/day.Yolk protein is really valuable.

Additionally, yolk contains precious choline for your mind as well as lutein and zeaxanthin which can play a serious role in the prevention of macular degeneration.

Don’t buy into the myth of high cholesterol! This myth has been debunked from the findings of multiple studies.

Try to find omega-3 eggs. -sunflower and pumpkin seeds(I keep a reservation for flax seeds)

- mixed raw nuts

-avocados(they belong to fruits!)

-extra virgin(cold pressed) olive oil

-turkey and chicken breasts

-low fat cottage cheese

-low fat plain yogurt with active live cultures.Avoid funny alternatives as frozen yogurt, yogurt with fruits and tons of artificial sweeteners etc.

If you have a creative imagination you can try endless combinations with yogurt, raw nuts, seeds, fresh or dried berries etc.

-wild fatty fish and especially the miraculous, humble sardines.

Sardines are a real food treasure: they contain omega -3 fatty acids, the much rare coenzyme Q10,selenium,calcium,phosphorus ,iron, potassium vitamin D and premium quality protein.

The best thing is that they contain practically zero mercury, a poison that has completely changed our tuna-eating habits.

Don’t miss the next entry! It will be devoted to foods which are considered to be healthy but they aren’t .They are the food traps.

True Communion 0

Posted on July 01, 2009 by piter

The Roman Catholic Church is sometimes criticized for clarifying that Protestants should not partake of Holy Communion at Mass. There are significant doctrinal differences between Catholics and Protestants as regards not only Holy Communion but also the purpose of the Mass. Stated simply, Catholics believe that the bread and wine served as Holy Communion is mysteriously transformed into the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharistic Liturgy during Mass. The Eucharist is the sacramental celebration of the Paschal Mystery. Holy Communion is the culmination of the Eucharistic Liturgy. Holy Communion is also referred to in Catholic terminology as the Real Presence (the teaching that Jesus Christ is present at and in the Eucharist in his body and blood, humanity and divinity, under the form of bread and wine)Protestants, generally speaking, do not share in this belief—at least not doctrinally.

All Protestants do not hold the same belief as regards Holy Communion. Some Christians maintain beliefs that are more similar to that of the Church– such as Lutherans–, while others maintain beliefs that are much further removed from Catholic beliefs–such as Baptists. For purposes of this essay I will not discuss the varying theological positions except to say that no other ecclesial community or church—save possibly the Eastern Orthodox—hold to a theory of Holy Communion that is identical with the Church. Consequently, Catholics and Protestants simply disagree on the Christological implications of Holy Communion. Logic then insists that if there is disagreement over the very nature of Holy Communion there is, in actuality, no unity of belief, and therefore no “communion” in the true sense of the word.

Many non-Catholics are proponents of the concept of intercommunion i.e., communion that is open to all confessing Christians regardless of their particular denominational affiliation. The Church concludes that intercommunion is a contradiction, as it does not represent true communion. The Roman Catholic Church is not the only church that practices closed communion. The Eastern Orthodox Church as well as certain Protestant churches such as Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod practice closed communion. Without addressing the exact substantive reasons that these groups practice closed communion, it can be assumed that these groups and the Church maintain similar procedural reasons for doing so.A commonly expressed sentiment by those discouraged from receiving Holy Communion prior to being “in communion” with the Church, is that they are being unfairly shut out of this “universal” sacrament. The argument runs that if a person truly believes that Jesus is calling him or her to partake in Holy Communion, he or she should be able to do so regardless of his or her particular Christian belief. “Communion is communion,” they say, and “who are you to deny a believer the right to partake in Holy Communion?” Egalitarian impulses can lead one to take umbrage at being shut out of the supposedly universal sacrament of Holy Communion. But is such reaction consistent with right reason? Is it not plausible the “unfairness” we sense is not accurately “unfairness” but instead a frustration symptomatic of our lack of unity of belief? And is it not equally plausible that when we promote intercommunion we lessen the chances that Christian unity will be realized because of a lack of “true communion” among Christians?

Before we begin to answer these questions we should first explore exactly what is meant when we use the term “communion”. Webster’s Dictionary defines communion as “an act or instance of sharing.” This definition in turn gives rise to the definition of communion which specifically incorporates the Christian definition of the sacrament of Holy Communion. But to define communion in such a manner is to engage in a certain degree of tautology and is wholly unsatisfactory. Therefore to understand specifically what we mean when we use the term “communion” we must apply some hermeneutical principles in order to draw forth from our shared Judeo-Christian history the true meaning of “communion.”

Examining the etymology of the word “communion” we find that it is translated from the Greekkoinonia.Koinoiniacan be defined as a partnership or fellowship. Importantly, koinoniais used nineteen times in most editions of the Greek New Testament. For present purposes, the most important usage of the word in the New Testament is in 1 Corinthians 10:16 (KJV) wherein the English word “communion” is used to representkoinonia. Specifically, St. Paul states “the cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we who are many, are one body, for we all partake of one loaf.”

For much of the English speaking world the King James Version of the Bible was the primary translation of the Bible in use for almost 400 years. As a result, it is likely that the vernacular of the term “communion” is derivative of the King James Version. This is significant because the language St. Paul uses is undeniably Christological. He speaks not of symbols, but rather uses a word that invokes a partnership or fellowship with both the body and blood of Christ. In the opening clause of 1 Corinthians 10:16 St. Paul says nothing of fellowship or interaction with other Christians; rather, he is speaking specifically of the relationship between the believer and the Lord, and how the two are joined by the consuming of the bread and wine. In the words spoken immediately following he states that this fellowship must not only be personal but in partaking of the communion with the body and blood of Christ we necessarily become one with each other at the same time we become one with Christ. Read in context this passage makes clear that there is both a personal and a social aspect of communion—both are necessary parts of the sacramental whole. Both are necessary for believers to be fulfilled and/or completed in the divine corpus in which they believe.

One cannot analyze the etymology of the word “communion” and ignore the context in which the word gained currency. Any attempt at a common understanding of what is meant by the term “communion” must necessarily assume that most Christians (and for that matter non-Christians) understand communion in light of the Greek wordkoinoinia. Thus the English term “communion” has a direct linguistic relationship to the Lord’s Supper instituted by Christ, and while the term can certainly have a secular meaning it is more than likely pregnant with a specific Christian meaning. Possibly most important of all is the fact that the term contains a historical, scriptural, and sacramental component which incorporates all Christians into one body through the act of consuming bread and wine in a sacramental context. Thus St. Paul is speaking of a “true communion,” and in doing so is passing on to the people of Corinth what the Apostles had learned about the Holy Communion from Jesus Christ himself. But what exactly is “true communion?”

Although the term “true communion” is not expressly defined by the Church, the teachings of the Church on Holy Communion clearly demonstrate a coherent de facto understanding of “true communion.” Stated simply, the definition of true communion requires that the communicants agree on the nature of that which is to be celebrated. Therefore, if Protestants (or Catholics for that matter) think that the bread and wine remain simply bread and wine throughout a Mass (or church service) there is not simply a difference of opinion but a fundamental disagreement on doctrinal teachings. One cannot have a fundamental disagreement on the nature of Holy Communion and still maintain that there is true communion.

This is in fact what Scripture teaches. St. Paul states in no uncertain terms that Christ is calling all Christians to unity, and most Christians believe that Christ does indeed will Christian unity. All are in agreement that we do not yet have Christian unity. And, one of the more significant—if not the most significant—area in which Christians are not unified surrounds the meaning of Holy Communion.

If there is no unity of belief, and no “true communion,” denying and/or ignoring the difference of belief does not cure the frustration. When Protestants seek to partake of Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass with no desire for true communion, an inherent contradiction occurs which the Church cannot endorse or deny. Hopefully, once one gets past the umbrage of being “left out,” one may inquire a little deeper and ask the question “why is this concept of true communion so important to the Catholic Church?”

It is insufficient to answer that non-Catholics have no right to demand concessions of a Catholic sacrament. Such an answer is neither going to persuade anyone nor even fully explain the reasons behind the Church’s position. Thus there will never be “true communion” if Catholics simply retort with “that’s the way it is – take it or leave it.” In order to fulfill Christ’s admonition that “we all be one,” we must be able to explain what we believe and why we believe. Thereafter we must discuss these beliefs with each other with honesty and most importantly with charity. To do anything less is to be less than what Christ is calling us all to be. So how now should Catholics explain the concept of “true communion” and its importance to the Church?

Let’s look first to the manner in which the Church views her role in human history and her longing for Christian reunification. Christ’s plea for unity in St. John’s Gospel at 12:21 is central to this analysis. The Blessed Disciple writes that Jesus said “that they all may be one, as thou, Father in me, and I in Thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” The Church maintains that “Christ bestowed unity on his Church from the beginning…and that Christ always gives his Church the gift of unity, but that the Church must always pray and work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity that Christ wills for her.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 820.

Pope Benedict recently wrote that “sacramental ‘mysticism’ is social in character, for in sacramental communion I become one with the Lord, like all other communicants. As St. Paul says “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we partake of one bread.” (1 Cor 10:17). Union with Christ is also union with all those to whom he gives himself……Communion draws me out of myself towards him, and thus towards unity with all Christians.” Benedict XVI, Deus Est Caritas. The desire to recover the unity of all Christians is a gift of Christ and a call of the Holy Spirit. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 280.

The Church’s mission is to forward the cause of unity in order that all Christians are “partaking of one bread.” It does so, however, on Christ’s terms, as practiced by His Church since the Last Supper. The consecrated bread and wine is mysteriously transformed into the actual body and blood of Christ. Specifically, Catholics believe that in order for the ordinary bread and wine to become the body and blood of Christ, a duly ordained priest is necessary to bring about this transubstantiation. No layperson has the power to effect this change. Technically speaking when the priest is celebrating the Eucharist he is actingin persona Christi—or in the person of Christ.

Interestingly enough, Martin Luther actually believed in the Real Presence; he just could not agree that the Catholic priest was the instrument of the transformation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. Succeeding generations of Protestants, however, have moved further and further away from Luther and now arguably only the Lutherans and the Anglicans believe in anything that approaches the Catholic belief in the Real Presence. Consequently, most Protestants see Holy Communion only as a symbol and do not believe that the preacher or the pastor has any power to effect a mysterious change to the ordinary items of bread and wine.

The priest has the power to actin persona Christiprecisely because of the ecclesiological position into which he has been ordained in the Roman Catholic Church. As successors to the Apostles, the bishops (and by extension the priests) of the Roman Catholic Church have the right and obligation to celebrate the Eucharist instituted by Christ. The celebration of the Eucharist is the primary focus of a priest’s life.

The purpose of the Mass (what Protestants might refer to as a church service) is not a self-affirming homily or a fire and brimstone sermon; rather, it is to unite the ordinary Catholic in the pew with Jesus Christ in the company of his fellow believers. Whereas many Protestants judge the effectiveness of a church service by the emotions or reasoning that is generated by the singing and the preaching, the Church sees these as modest compliments to the main purpose of the “church service” viz. Holy Communion. Stated simply, Roman Catholics believe that the Eucharist (of which Holy Communion is the liturgical culmination) is the “source and summit of the life and mission of the Church.”

A well-intentioned Protestant might ask for the Scriptural basis upon which the Church make such a claim. In fact, Catholic belief in the Real Presence is based on the historical practice of the early Church and Christ’s quite clear commandment in the Gospel of St. John, wherein the Lord states

You can have no life in yourselves, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood. The man who eats my flesh and drinks my blood enjoys eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. My flesh is real food, my blood is real drink. He who eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, lives continually in me, and I in him.

Jesus then put this belief into practice when he instituted Holy Communion at the Last Supper. Wherein at Luke 22:19 Jesus states “Then he took the bread, and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them saying “This is my body, given for you, do this for a commemoration of me”.

The Roman Catholic Church—as well as the Orthodox community– has held essentially the same belief regarding Holy Communion since the 1st century. We know for certain that St. Ignatius of Antioch in 110 A.D. said of those who hold heterodox opinions that “they abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, which flesh suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness raised up again.”

Also, St. Justin Martyr writing in the mid-2nd century said

For we do not receive these things as common bread or common drink; but as Jesus Christ our Savior being incarnate by God’s Word took flesh and blood for our salvation, so also we have been taught that the food consecrated by the Word of prayer which comes from him, from which our flesh and blood are nourished by transformation, is the flesh and blood of that incarnate Jesus; and

We call this food Eucharist; and no one else is permitted to partake of it, except one who believes our teaching to be true…

And then there are the comments of St. Athanasius’, who in the 4th century almost single-handedly fought off the Arian heresy ( heresy which denied the Trinity), when he states:

So long as prayers of supplication and entreaties have not been made there is only bread and wine. But after the great and wonderful prayers have been completed, then the bread is become the Body, and the wine the Blood, of our Lord Jesus Christ. And again, Let us approach the celebration of the mysteries. This bread and wine, so long as the prayers and supplication have not taken place, remain simply what they are. But after the great prayers and supplication have been set forth, the Word comes down into the bread and wine—and thus His Body is confected.

It is important to note that these Early Church Fathers cited above were responsible for transmitting, formulating, and defending—sometimes unto death–many of the dogmatic beliefs that Protestants and Catholics both hold in common.

Catholics and Protestants paper over a significant issue when we pretend that we have a similar exegesis. In fact, we do not have full, true communion of belief and to act otherwise vitiates our professed beliefs. Whether it is a symbol or the actual body and blood of Christ is thus not a detail that can be allowed to be “fudged” just to protect our ecumenical sensibilities. Pope Benedict said as much when he wrote:

It is not for us to act as if there were unity where this is not the case. The Eucharist is never a means we can use to any end; it is the gift of the Lord, the heart of the Church herself, and not within our control. It is not a matter of personal friendship here, of the subjective faith, which in any case we have no means of measuring, but of standing within the unity of the one Church and of our humbly waiting for God to grant unity himself.

“The Eucharist is a Sacrifice, the presentation of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.” Raztinger, God is Near Us, 44. When belief in the Real Presence is forsaken, the purpose of Holy Communion is inverted—and is inverted in homocentric manner. Removing the Real Presence from Holy Communion leads ineluctably to a diminution in the understanding of the sacrifice made on Calvary. For Catholics, therefore, Holy Communion is not simply a means to worshipping God; rather, Holy Communion is the end to which we are called upon to aspire in rightly ordered worship. Holy Communion is not simply a vehicle of worship; rather, it is in fact the celebration of God’s gift to man in his son Jesus Christ. Since Holy Communion is God’s gift to man, we distort its meaning when we view it as no more than another manner in which to worship God. It is so much more than that. For Catholics, the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is where time and eternity meet, and as such Catholics are called to celebrate the eternal sacrifice of Christ. A Catholic Mass is not simply another “church service,” and by extension Holy Communion is not simply a symbolic gesture or alternative form of worship—no matter how reverent, sincere, and heart-felt the gesture and belief may be.”

So where does this leave the earnest Protestant who simply wants to break bread with his Catholic brethren? Even after understanding the significance of the Church’s position on Holy Communion, he may still be desirous of partaking of Holy Communion while remaining Protestant. Some of these Christians may sense that the Church is “on to something” yet choose to stay outside the Church because of any number of reasons. Sometimes it is the differences between Catholic culture and Protestant culture–and the attendant difficulties that obtain when one converts from one to the other. Other times it is the attachment to their community that keeps people away from true communion with the Church. Whatever the reason, many times it is these people who are most nonplussed when discouraged from sharing in Holy Communion. Some even decry the teaching as being inconsistent with Jesus’ teachings, and yet another example of the “legalism” in the Church.

The Church is not unsympathetic to their plight. In fact, she understands full well the attraction of her doctrine on Holy Communion precisely because she holds so dearly the doctrine of the Eucharist which maintains that Christ is made present at each Mass. (What Christian would not want to be in the presence of his Lord?) The Church understands full well the pain precisely because she feels the painful rift within her body. It would be very easy for the Church, in an effort to foster Christian unification, to permit non-Catholics who really do believe in the Real Presence to partake of Holy Communion at Mass. But doing so would in the end actually destroy the unity the Church seeks to promote, for were the Church to allow it, she would serve the inherent contradiction that actually destroys unity.

History gives good counsel on the folly of this type of effort. The Reformation clearly demonstrates the slippery slope that the Church would embark upon should she allow this type of syncretism. Martin Luther never meant to jettison the belief in the Real Presence but that is exactly what happened in certain Protestant denominations once the dogma of the Holy Eucharist was modified. The Church simply cannot permit this to happen. She cannot do so for herself; she cannot do so for her lay faithful; and she cannot do so for all non-Catholics.

Non-Catholics who seek to share in Holy Communion with their Catholic brothers and sisters must realize that such false communion would in time diminish the eternal elements of the Church that they find so attractive in the first instance. It has been nearly 500 years since the Reformation and probably now more than ever the Holy Spirit is reuniting Christians through the “longing and yearning” of scattered Christian souls who wish to enter into “true communion” with the Church. Just in the last ten years the Lutherans and the Catholics have been able to sit down and come to significant agreement on the Real Presence in Holy Communion.

The Holy Spirit is doing things in the name of Christian unification that would have been unthinkable just fifty years ago. Through the shared prayers of Catholics and Protestants alike, Christians everywhere are returning to the Church, and they are returning not because she has compromised her beliefs but precisely because she has not. And for those who have yet to be received back into the Church the very fact that there are more and more Christians who are moving back to a belief in the Real Presence is proof that the Church is correct in requiring “true communion” and rejecting false communion. “True communion” is the light by which Christians are led back to the table of Christian unity. Only through true communion can we attain the goal of spiritual fulfillment, and only through “true communion” can we truly be what Jesus Christ wishes for us—“ that they all may be one.”

Forget Dieting: You Must Eat Healthy For The Rest Of Your Life 0

Posted on July 01, 2009 by piter

Everyone knows the things they have to do to lose weight: Eat healthy food, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and get plenty of sleep. Sure it’s easy to say these things, but what about actually doing them all at the same time?

If you’re in dieting mode, you may look at your dietary changes as temporary, something you work on until you reach your goal. You may even see your diet program as a crutch, something you depend on to change your behaviors. A bad dieting slip up can mess up your progress for weeks on end. Your diet program does not consider emotions & stress that may lead you to overeat.

The “you can never eat that again” mentality of dieting makes us desire junk food even more.

Weekends often become an excuse to overindulge. Finally we get to order those cheese fries we’ve been eying all week! Work parties or gatherings with friends or family turn into feasts and can get us off track for the days following. We start treating each indulgence as a “just this once” occasion before we go back on our diet. Those indulgences add up making your goal that much further in the future.

When you get out of the dieting mindset and into the healthy living for the rest of your life mindset you will find that you can enjoy all foods in a moderate way. Listening to your body will make the biggest difference. Learn to experience real hunger, and enjoy real food that your body craves. Having junk food cravings is normal, everyone has them. It doesn’t mean that you have to satisfy your every craving. If you really do want something that is high in calories and low in nutrients then allow yourself whatever it is when you’re hungry and in moderation. Savor it and do not allow yourself to feel guilty about it.

Keep going no matter what; don’t let small setbacks grow into larger day-long binges. You just have to move forward after having learned from your mistakes. The only way to lose weight is to be consistent. Once you’ve formed your new habits, they will stick with you for a lifetime. You will never have to diet again. Just listen to what your body tells you. If you listen to your body you will be lead to eating the nutrients (found in real healthy food) that your body needs.

Weight loss doesn’t have to be slow and dreadful. Think about the healthy and slim people in your life, are they tracking all of their calories? Chances are they aren’t. They are aware of what they are eating and keeping a mental checklist of their food. If they had a carb heavy breakfast, chances are they will stick to a light dinner. Truly healthy people always make exercising a priority.

All Natural Foods and High Fiber Foods Are the Secrets to a Happy, Healthy Life 0

Posted on July 01, 2009 by piter

When you see candy bars referred to as “all natural foods” or cookies labeled “high fiber foods” do you believe they’re really good for you? Some food manufacturers are now using many new tricks to persuade the general public that their products are healthy, regardless of the ingredients. Some of those ingredients include “natural flavorings”, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils and trans fats, which have been linked to serious, life threatening diseases. Other ingredients are cleverly disguised as healthy high fiber foods or all natural foods, when in fact they’re really just more processed junk.
You don’t have to fall for the marketing gimmicks. Avoid eating mysteriously processed foods by including more real, all natural foods and high fiber foods in your diet. When you pay attention to what you eat you will increase your self-awareness and your self esteem. You’ll find that it’s easier to manage a healthy weight, create more energy and develop a happier, healthier lifestyle.
As you stick to a diet of more authentic all natural foods and high fiber foods, your digestive system naturally works to break down the nutrients using the proper amount of energy, without tricking the body. Foods that contain numerous additives may take longer to digest. They often force the body to work harder in order to metabolize the additives. This can drain vital energy, making you feel lazy and tired. All natural foods provide the body with more usable energy and high fiber foods help your digestive system work more efficiently. Your body likes that, so it rewards you with health and happiness.
Foods that contain artificial sweeteners are even more difficult to process. The body creates insulin in order to break down glucose. This is not a big problem when digesting all natural foods or high fiber foods that contain natural glucose. However, when you eat food that has artificial sweeteners the body believes it has consumed sugar. Insulin is then created, but can’t be used to break down the glucose because it’s not really there. In a sense, the artificial sweetener has tricked the body. The unused insulin is eventually stored in the liver. The more toxins that accumulate in your liver, the less fat that can be broken down. That’s why artificial sweeteners are believed to actually contribute to obesity, and have been known to trigger certain cancers.
By consuming more high fiber foods, especially all natural foods such as fruits and vegetables, you will feel healthier. Numerous studies have shown that this kind of sound nutrition will lower your risks of contracting life-threatening diseases. You will be far less fearful of getting sick and your brain will let your body know that. Often, it’s the stress created from thinking you might have an illness that actually contributes to the onset of a breakdown in the immune system.
Fiber is one of the most important elements missing from the standard American diet (SAD). It is common knowledge today that high fiber foods help protect the body against certain preventable diseases such as colon cancer, hemorrhoids, obesity, heart disease, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. This makes high fiber food an essential ingredient for a healthy happy life and an important part of the all natural foods you choose.
Experts suggest that people eat at least 35 grams of fiber per day. Unfortunately, the average person only consumes ten grams of fiber a day. If you stick to a diet filled with healthy, all natural foods, it’s much easier to reach that 35 gram target. High fiber foods can easily be obtained from fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, cereals, whole grains and pastas.
Here are a few specific examples of high fiber foods you can eat every day:

Losing weight without the Gimmicks

There are so many diets, pills, potions, exercise machines and dieting plans out there it is no wonder that losing a few pounds has become a miserable process, and 9 out of 10 people simply give up in disgust. The worse fact is; that it means throwing away good money that has been paid for the program in the first place. The weight loss industry/ markets prey on people that want to lose a few pounds with empty promises, and then blame these same people afterwards that they have not followed the instructions, or diet plan as indicated properly. Hidden away below most programs is a disclaimer that hardly anyone reads which protects the manufacturer. Losing weight without the gimmicks in a natural way without stress or misery would certainly be a breath of fresh air for overweight people that have had it up to the neck or their ears with useless weight loss programs.

Natural Weight loss without all the lies

The truth will hardly be told by weight loss product manufacturers that you can lose weight without all the gimmicks. What losing weight without the gimmicks means; is not having to pop weight loss supplements, drink funny meal replacement shakes that have a nasty after taste, or sit watching people enjoy real food while you have to eat rabbit food. Even more; losing weight without the gimmicks means not getting on an exercise machine that feels like torture, following miserable dieting programs, counting calories and hating your lifestyle. With all the pressures of modern society and financial problems people have already how much more miserable can you get.

Counting calories to lose weight is a waste of time.

Losing weight without the gimmicks means stopping to count your calories for every lettuce leaf, funny rye breads that taste like dog biscuits, or reaching for those limp lettuce leaves. Imagine the relief if the real truth came out. Not just the truth but the REAL TRUTH!! Counting calories and starving yourself means that your body starts craving for food, a craving that eventually gets so hard to resist that you go off the rails and your efforts are lost. Everyone has unique tastes in foods and even though they may look like no-no foods they may not be when eaten properly. The only real way to lose weight without gimmicks is giving your body what it needs in the right quantities. This means a no stress eating plan that is properly designed for each individual according to your lifestyle.

Losing weight without all the gimmicks forever

Wasting your hard earned money on weight loss formulas that you know deep down inside are really not going to work, is just going to make you more miserable and this is one of the prime reasons yo-yo dieting happens which is dangerous. You can get to a point where you say stuff it, and start eating something to reward yourself and this ends up getting out of hand. Losing weight without the gimmicks in a natural proven way is possible if you know where to look for it. Weight loss markets may brainwash you to sell their products, so when you find the real truth staring you in the face it is possible you may end up overlooking it.

Traditional Chinese Food Is The Best 0

No trip to China would be complete without getting a real taste of the wealth of foods on offer. Chinese food is famous all around the world, and not without reason. If you’re visiting China you’ll get the opportunity to try one of the world’s most famous cuisines in its traditional way and no one could argue with the fact that it’s also the best way.

If you’re wondering what to expect from traditional Chinese food then forget what you’ve experienced in your own country. The real food of China is so much better that foreign imitations pale in comparison. Many Western dishes have been tailored to meet the available ingredients, or in some cases the true essence of the recipe has been lost over numerous years and translations. Whilst sweet and sour is a popular dish in the West, many Chinese chefs wouldn’t even dream of cooking it. Whilst sweet and sour still exists in China it’s nothing like the sweet and sour that we experience in Western restaurants.

China has a very long history rich with tradition. It is this tradition and history which has given China such a wonderfully rich and diverse cuisine. Whilst civilization in China started at least 7000 years ago records do not date back this far, but what archaeology has shown is that food has always had a central role in the lives of Chinese people. Whilst the food lacked the sophistication of today’s cooking there was already a deep consideration for healthy eating.

The Chinese Dynasties saw a huge range of ideas develop alongside an increasing variety of foods. Trade allowed for many more ingredients to be used and the wealth that such trade led to also gave chefs a chance to develop their skills and make money doing so. The best chefs competed with each other for royal approval, hoping to be appointed as royal chefs. The best dishes created by the chefs combined fine food and health benefits for which they received rich rewards.

Those dishes which became most popular became food that the wealthiest across China dined upon. Over time lodges in which travelers stayed became more and more akin to modern-day restaurants and these made the foods which were originally the preserve of the royal and wealthy Chinese available to all. Thanks to modern transportation regional specialties are available all across China, giving an even greater variety of flavors from the vast Chinese country. Chinese food is not only famous for its flavor but also its names. With dishes such as “Phoenix and Dragon” or “Ants Climbing on Trees” much fun can be had in discovering the legends behind the names over a good meal.

One difficulty many foreigners have with ordering Chinese food is the language barrier. Chinese menus are written in Chinese characters – a notoriously difficult language which takes a long time to learn. If you have Chinese friends it’s worth asking them to translate, but otherwise you can simply point at what other diners are eating and try food in that way.

In today’s life, eradicating every pleasure in life is not the goal, nor it is realistic. All of us enjoy some sort of junk/ processed foods like burgers, pizzas, readymade soups, ready-to-eat foods etc.

But have you ever realized, that what could be the consequences if we make an Occasional treat to a Mainstay of our diet ?

Processed food is actually made from real food that has been put through chemical processes and is infused with chemicals & preservatives . That is food that has been altered from the way in which nature presented it to us, in some kind of factory.

Three major queries that come to our mind when we go for these foods are :

.

Let’s discuss about these Queries ………………..

It is amazing how many varieties of additives are added to food. Look at the label on any processed food can or jar, and see if you can recognize what is there in it, like:

And many more…

They actually help to keep food last longer and to make it tasty, look and smell simply great! But do we ever think that how problematic it can be? They may cause nausea, allergic reactions, headache, mood swings, hyperactivity, depression, or even cancer.

In nature, if a food is stored long enough, it loses its nutritive qualities & is no longer fit for human consumptioni.e. it spoils…. or insects & germs consume it. However, when the additives are added, the insects and germs find the food too poisonous and toxictherefore it would kill them if they ate it, so they don’t. The resultis food does not “spoil”. It remains as it is until we eat it. But the fact remains that the food value is gone.

Now, What is removed, during the processing or “refining” process? Is much of the fibre and other nutrients. Vitamins, minerals etc are destroyed in the high heat used in the processing. Now you must be thinking that what are we eating then?

So, what are you waiting for ?? Begin to eliminate all these processed foods from your diet, stay away from any food in a can, jar, packet or bottle on the shelf of a store. Either eat your food raw(salads) or cook it at home. Avoid anything that has gone through a factory since you don’t know what all has gone into it.

Start enjoying the real food – Eat Healthy – Be Healthy….
