5 Tips to Avoid Eating Junk Food & Stay Healthy and Slim 0

Posted on July 04, 2009 by piter

What do you mean by junk foods?

These are foods which are low in nutrition but high in calories. They contain a high amount of fat, oil, salt or sugar. Examples can include too much chocolate or candies, potato chips, over-fried items etc.

Needless to say they can be bad for your weight loss efforts and even bad for health if you eat too much of these junk foods. For better health, we need to stay away from eating junk food as much as possible because they come with so many bad effects.

While it may not be so easy to completely cut down on eating junk food, we can certainly lessen our consumption with a little bit of determination. By lessening consumption of junk food we can also curb over-eating to a certain extent thereby helping in proper weight management.

Instead of eating junk food we can then develop the habit of eating healthier foods and eating food in moderate quantities. Below are some tips to help you stay away from eating junk foods.

How to Avoid Eating Junk Food? 5 Tips to Help You:

1. Don’t buy junk food: Avoid buying junk food while shopping for your monthly or weekly grocery at the store. If you don’t buy junk food then it can be easier to stay away from them.

Try to keep your fridge free from tons of junk and unhealthy or fattening foods. So sometimes even if you feel like having some junk snacks or gulping down a coke, you will not be able to do so because its not available now. You have to go out and buy it which may prevent you from giving in to the temptation.

2. Developing healthy eating habits early: If we can teach our children to eat healthy foods right from childhood, then they may grow up to become healthy eaters. They may be less prone to eat junk food later on in life.

And it is all the more important to teach children healthy eating habits because they are more likely to be attracted to junk food. So we may need to pay more attention in teaching them healthy eating habits.

Also as adults we need to lead by example. So we too will have an added incentive to stay away from junk foods because we don’t want to set a bad example for our kids.

3. Educating yourself about junk food: Many people do not fully realize the negative effects of junk food not just for weight loss but also for the health in general. By fully educating yourself and others about the negative and bad effects of junk food, it can become relatively easier for us to stay away from them.

4. Keeping a food journal: This tip can be very handy to curb eating junk food and to curb overeating. Write down in a journal what you eat everyday – whether its healthy eating or bad eating, note everything down.

At the end of the day if you look at your journal you may be shocked to see your very own eating habits. If you keep doing this for few days you may realize how bad your eating habits really are and may find a new inner determination to overcome this bad habit at all costs!

5. Substitute healthy foods for junk foods: Write down the common junk foods you frequently consume like soft drinks, sweets, chips, fried and oily items etc. Next make a list of healthy foods that you can eat instead of the junk items. This list can include carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, fruit and vegetable juices etc.

Most of the times, we do not eat either for taste or due to hunger. We just want to munch on something which can lead to eating junk food. In such cases, we can munch on healthier and low calorie items like carrots, cabbage etc instead of eating junk food.

Replacing your junk food snacks with healthier options can be one great way to avoid eating junk food and staying healthy, lean and fit! With the help of the above tips you can overcome this bad habit and finally be able to say a firm no to junk foods!

Lose Belly Fat and Get Ripped Abs Eating Junk Food 0

Posted on July 03, 2009 by piter

Do you want your very own set of chiselled, ripped abs, but don’t have the willpower to stick to a diet? Well, you are in luck. In this article I’m going to explain to you how you can lose belly fat and get ripped abs eating absolutely anything you want, including junk food!

Before I start I want to clear up a common myth. We all have six pack abs right now. Problem is the majority of us can’t see them because they are covered by a layer of fat. This is why doing endless ab exercises don’t work. You will never see your abs until you lose all of your belly fat which is covering them up. Hence, this article will show you how to lose fat and reveal your ripped abs.

I know it sounds outrageous to recommend eating junk food to get ripped abs, so let me clarify. I don’t recommend eating nothing but junk food. That is obviously unhealthy. However, if you want to lose belly fat and get ripped abs you should eat junk food whenever you want.

4 reasons why…

1. HELPS KEEP OUR CRAVINGS IN CHECK

By allowing yourself to eat whatever you want, you are no longer depriving yourself of having anything. This goes a long way in keeping your cravings under control. Let’s face it, the reason why so many of us fail, is because our cravings become unbearable. Usually these cravings are for the foods that we are depriving ourselves from having.

So the key here is, to not deprive yourself of anything. Doing so only encourages your cravings to intensify, to the point that sooner or later, you will succumb to the pressure.

2. IT IS MUCH EASIER AND IT WORKS

The absolute bottom line to successfully losing your belly fat is to simply eat less food than you burn off. Pretty obvious I know, but it’s true. Forget the thinking that a certain food is making you fat, because it doesn’t. Too much food makes you fat!

A calorie is a calorie. There is no difference between a calorie from a carrot, and a calorie from a donut. It is all a form of energy that can be burnt off, or stored as fat if not used. Knowing this, wouldn’t it make sense to eat foods you enjoy? Wouldn’t this make losing fat a hell of a lot easier?

Let me ask you this. Why do you think people lose fat on all different kinds of diets? Because the one thing all these diets have in common is that there total calorie intake is usually less than we need a day. That’s all there is to it. However, the author pinpoints the success of his program down to his very own, special and unique manipulation of protein, carbs or fats, or avoiding this food, and only eating these foods.

So just remember, as long as you eat less calories than you burn off a day, you will lose belly fat and eventually will be sporting your very own ripped abs.

3. EAT HEALTHIER

Believe it or not, but allowing yourself to eat junk food can actually help you eat healthier. This is because it reduces our cravings for junk food. This will result in less binges on junk and may even reduce the amount of junk you actually eat!

I know from personal experience that I eat less junk now then when I was following those strict diets. Eating super strict for a few weeks created such unbearable cravings that I was always bingeing on junk food.

Now that I can eat whatever I want, my emotions are a lot more intact. If I crave something, I have it, but I don’t feel the urge to eat massive quantities of it to make up for weeks of deprivation. I also enjoy eating healthier now, but if I crave a piece of chocolate, you better believe I’ll have apiece. (If not, a week from now I might explode and eat 10 pieces!)

4. CONSISTENCY

You will never lose your excess belly fat and get ripped abs if you lack consistency. You need to able to stick to a program long enough to lose the amount of fat necessary to see your abs. The general rule of thumb is to lose 1-2 pounds of fat a week. Therefore if you need to lose 20 pounds, you want to be consistent for 10-20 weeks.

This is the reason why I recommend eating whatever you want. It will make it a lot more enjoyable, and a lot easier to maintain the consistency required. And contrary to what others may think, it does work. Isn’t it obvious, eat less food than you need and you will lose fat. Simple huh?

Junk Food Bans In Schools – The Practical Side 0

Posted on July 03, 2009 by piter

In the face of what many see as an exploding obesity epidemic among both adults and children, a growing number of state and regional legislatures are passing laws that prohibit the sale of junk foods in school vending machines and cafeterias.
The new regulations differ from region to region, but the general drift is to reduce the availability of sugar, salt, and fat laden foods and snacks, and replace them with more nutritious healthy foods and snacks.
The money issue
Such good intentions are not always easy to implement. Money raises its ugly head at numerous points along the way, making it difficult to move to more healthy alternatives.
First, vending machine operators naturally prefer to fill their machines with junk food because these “foods” generally have two major advantages over other more healthy alternatives. They have a higher profit margin, and they sell better because kids (for whatever reason) prefer them. This means the vending operators can offer schools attractive profit-sharing incentives when they fill up their machines with pop and candy bars.
As everybody in the business knows, “healthy” vending machines cannot properly compete with “unhealthy” ones until attractive, good-tasting healthy snack products are made available at a competitive price.
And student organizations themselves are split on the wisdom of going “healthy”. Many student groups use candy sales as one of their primary fund-raising methods. According to Laura Thomas, a senior at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, California, “These sales fit the needs of the clubs because they can sell at school, during lunch or in class. If clubs were forced to switch to selling other things like calendars or magazines, they would have to drastically shift their target market. Chances are students simply wouldn’t be interested in those new products as much as they are in candy.”
In other words, not allowing junk food sales by student groups would make fund-raising programs in the schools much more difficult, and would threaten the current fund-raising structure that feeds cash directly into the school program. Of course not everyone agrees this would be a bad thing. As another California student, Leah Karlins, a junior at Branham High School in San Jose said “it seems no one is asking the obvious question — why do our schools need to sell brownies to pay for sports teams and clubs?”
Meal changes don’t come easily
There are similar problems when it comes to changing cafeteria menus. Not only is it usually less expensive to offer french fries every day, but it is much easier, takes less planning, and will probably be more broadly accepted by the students doing the eating.
Menu changes usually involve a good deal of experimentation and have to be introduced slowly. Students are not going to switch to “eating healthy” without a relatively long and gradual transition period.
And of course cost is always a factor. Most school boards in the U.S. receive a meal subsidy from one or more levels of government, so they must keep their costs below that level. At the same time they must meet the gradually tightening nutritional standards. These standards are sometimes the result of intense industrial lobbies that appear to encourage “healthy” change, but can also make it difficult.
For instance, long-standing policies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture tend to discriminate in favor of diets that are heavy in meat and milk. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine notes that meat alternatives are not subsidized by government, while meat and meat products are.
The result is that a low-fat, low-cholesterol veggie burger is often twice as expensive as a high-fat hamburger. The same thing happens with milk. Milk production is subsidized, but not the production of low-fat alternatives. And milk is even mandated within the U.S. federal school guidelines which require schools to offer only milk to drink, and include it in the base price of the lunch meal.
The bottom line is that the problem of poor eating habits among children is not something that is likely to go away quickly. While schools may dominate a child’s daily activities, they still only account for one meal a day. So what the children are doing for the rest of their meals is even more important.
This fact supports the claim that what schools really should be doing is teaching about nutrition and the importance of physical activity, and using school programs to set an example — as a matter of “putting your money where your mouth is”.
The objective should be to have these habits carry over into the rest of their choices and activities. Lunch programs, vending machines, and school activity programs are not solutions to the problems of overweight and inactivity. They primarily serve as examples of a better lifestyle, and point children in a healthier direction.

At Last… a Junk Food Junkies Solution to Losing Weight! 0

Posted on July 03, 2009 by piter

Have you ever tried to lose weight by simply deciding you are going to stop being a junk food junkie? You finish off the last 4 Oreos in the bag and then spend the next three or four days eating nothing but yogurt, chicken and bland salads. Then what happens? You find yourself opening up a new bag of Oreos because you feel that life is not worth living if you can not be happy about what you eat.

Do not worry. This happens to most junk food junkies because they think they can only lose weight with will power and an abrupt change in their diet. Although this looks great on paper, it does not work for the majority of people because the approach is what we call cold turkey. Change needs to happen gradually in order for it to work long term.

First face the facts. You are a junk food junkie. You have been eating junk food for a long time and it is extremely difficult for you to eat a carrot instead of those tasty McDonald french fries. It has taken you years upon years to get out of shape and become sedentary. If it happened overnight, you would have noticed it. No one can break a long-time habit easily.

In order for anyone to lose weight and keep it off for good, a person must lead a healthy lifestyle. Knowing this is important because it is the ultimate goal for anyone wanting to lose weight. Leading a healthy lifestyle includes exercise, proper nutrition and a sense of well-being for the areas in your life that give you joy. All on a daily basis.

Your first thought is probably that it takes too much work to to kick the junk food junkie habit and lead a healthy lifestyle. Exercise every day? Who has the time and energy for that?! And proper nutrition will just take you back to those bland salads again, right? Wrong! People who lead a healthy lifestyle eat McDonald’s french fries and Oreos. They just do not eat them all the time.

As far as exercise is concerned, all a person needs to keep themselves fit and active is 30 minutes. Walking, running, bike riding, dancing, roller skating, skiing…it does not matter. If you can not set aside a half hour each day to ensure the health of the only body you have to take care of in your life, you need to make more changes than just weight loss!

What does all of this have to do with how you can quit being a junk food junkie? A lot! Now that you know leading a healthy lifestyle is the ultimate goal, you can set up a road map to get there. Everyone wants to be there overnight, but setting a realistic time frame to achieve your goals is a more effective and productive approach.

Your parents probably told you to eat your vegetables when you were a child. Somewhere along the way you decided to eat for yourself and junk food replaced what you have always known was a healthier choice. The shock value of going back to those vegetables without continuing to eat your junk food will not feel right to you. I say keep eating your junk food.

What? Keep eating junk food? Yep, that is my advice. But here is the catch. Instead of eating junk food every time you sit down to a meal or a snack, choose one meal a day that you will change to better food choices. I told you this would be gradual. If you usually eat Cheez-its every day at 3pm for a snack, eat a bowl of granola cereal instead.

After making this small daily change for a few weeks, discipline yourself to take it to the next level. Now that you are OK with eating good once a day, go for two! This could be two snacks, two meals or a snack and a meal. I would go for a meal this time because it will accelerate your weight loss more than changing your snack habits every day.

So after a month of this, you are not really eating junk food all the time are you? You have probably lost some weight but you still get to eat pizza every Friday night. Hmmm…interesting how this works. Now that you are well on your way to eating properly without giving up the foods you love, it is time to think about exercise.

We have already established that you do not have 30 minutes a day to sweat on the treadmill. OK, how about 5 minutes? Everyone has 5 minutes to walk around the block. Spend 5 minutes a day doing this for a week. Once you start feeling better, which you will, you will want to do it more often. I can almost guarantee you will find 10 minutes in your busy schedule.

Keep going at this speed. Increase your exercise time each week by 5 minutes. After a month and a half you will be up to 30 minutes and that is it! Whether you want to continue improving your health is your own choice, but for the most part, people only need 30 minutes of sustained exercise a day to maintain a healthy weight.

Even if you are reading this and you know you can eat better than one meal a day, or exercise longer than 30 minutes, do not do it. You will just burn out like all the other times you have tried to lose weight. Keep it gradual and eventually you will get to the point where you are actually exercising and eating healthy most of the time without thinking twice about it.

This approach worked for me 15 years ago and I have maintained a weight loss of 70 pounds ever since. I had severe asthma and could not exercise at first, but as my body became healthy, I suddenly found myself off medications and outside on a bicycle every day. Words cannot describe how happy I am to be able to do this now and breath properly now.

For things to change, you have got to change. Just remember kicking the junk food junkie habit does not have to be overnight. In fact, the more gradual it is, the more effective it will be in the long run.

The Everlasting Debate On Junk Foods 0

Posted on July 03, 2009 by piter

The current global junk food model is not only unable to feed the entire population, but slowly poisons those who eat. Does the current junk food situation go against the preservation of life?Certain ecological conditions must be respected to avoid imbalances in crops or herds. Environmental imbalances created by junk food disrupt the self-regulatory mechanisms of all living beings and require the continuous monitoring of our health, before it gets too late. Here is an article that sums up why, in the West and throughout the world, debate and concern has reached the current problems of food contamination. I. Amiano, vice president of the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (SEAE), ponders on these issues and thinks about the neoliberal attack on the sovereignty of the people and the environment with pesticides and artificial hormones.

At the same time, he says organic farming is the basic solution and is more effective against all these problems. The data prepared by the editorial staff of The Ecologist, citing experts on each specific topic relating to organic foods, support this information.Industrialists routinely employ several thousands of chemical molecules in food production from agriculture, livestock and food industry, called biocides. As its name suggests, it is basically there to kill or stop the biological activity of animals that harm the crops. The evaluation system of these molecules in chemical synthesis offers no guarantees of safety, but on the contrary, every single day, there is a growing correlation between the use of these substances and various degenerative diseases, as well as an endless list of other harmful effects on virtually all forms of life on planet earth: Desertification, erosion, pollution, and the disappearance of thousands of animal and plant species are also occurring at an alarming rate. For decades, people have been developing styles of alternative agriculture and animal husbandry regulated and protected officially by the European Union (Regulation 2092/91 of June 24, 1991) elaborating on the benefits of organic farming, organic biodiversity, ensuring food security and sovereignty and sorting out foods capable of competing economically and with productivity. Officials are addressing the direct and indirect impacts and the global problems of chemical-intensive agriculture and its latter expression based on engineering and genetics.About DDTThe most significant example was that of DDT, Highly recognized in 1948 and banned today in the world for its cumulative nature of toxic materials in humans and whose presence has been and continue to flow throughout the food chain worldwide, even in milk.Concern about the availability of sufficient food has been a constant, an insistent argument to justify the use increasingly aggressive technologies to make the food produced and / or extracted. There is also growing concern seeking to discredit alternative movements offered another model of agricultural production, arguing that such models are incapable of feeding humanity. On the other hand, is well known that healthy agriculture is heading steadfast in response to the pressures much developed societies, and even more because of food scandals, less aggressive towards industrialized methods.

Junk food–every one knowingly or unknowingly consuming junk food as diet often. By the way, what is Junk food ?Junk food is an informal term applied to some foods with little or no nutritional value, or to products with nutritional value but which also have ingredients considered unhealthy when regularly eaten, or to those considered unhealthy to consume at all.Factors contributing to labeling as junk food are high levels of refined sugar, white flour, trans fat and saturated fat, salt, and additives such as preservatives and coloring agents. Others include lack of proteins, vitamins, fiber and other nutrients for a healthy diet. From the above it is clear that junk food has no health value in whatsoever manner and it is a waste of money only. A healthy diet should always include protein, vitamin, fiber and other nutrients which are not at all available in any junk food.A large number of leading organizations are engaged in the manufacture of junk foods and many have a passion to eat these types of junk foods. The list of junk foods is very exhaustive and the list would include foods that are high in salt, sugar, fat or calories and low nutrient content.Salted snack foods, candy, gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages are some of the major junk foods. Generally, they offer little in terms of protein, vitamins or minerals and lots of calories from sugar or fat. The term “empty calories” reflects the lack of nutrients. Some of the important junk foods are Beef Burgers, Potato Chips, Coco Cola, fried fingers. By spending lot of money we are purchasing lot of diseases. The life is to live happily and not to eat in a ridiculous way to have a unhealthy life style. Having a good health is worth of thousand million dollars and if you lose wealth you can regain but health is not like that. Parents should be more conscious in selecting the diets for their children and should avoid completely the junk foods, which may not have any health value to their children. Children should be discouraged by explaining the ill health value of junk foods. Obesity and gaining weight are the major causes of eating junk foods. By allowing our children to eat junk foods, we are allowing a society to grow with obesity only. The children will feel bad about their health once they grow and will surely blame their parent for not having properly fed them.Everyone tries to lose weight after gaining so much of weight by eating junk foods and fatty foods. Teachers should also play a role in explaining the bad effects of eating junk foods so that the student community will have more awareness about the junk foods. Most of us are much attracted towards the junk foods of various varieties for its tastiness and unaware of their values we are eating and should set our mind to avoid junk foods by not purchasing from the stores and storing in our houses.Economy also plays a role in curbing us from purchasing nutrient-rich vegetable filled salad with meat and we are forced to purchase a fatty meal from the Mc Donald. Price war should be kept apart and making good food with calorific value should be prepared at home instead going to KFC or McDonald. Eating junk foods once in a while will not have any adverse effects in your body or health. But regular consumption of junk foods will surely put you and your family in trouble. Those who are interested in losing weight and maintain a good weight should not touch the junk foods in any form and should eat good diets having calorific value. Eating lot of fresh vegetables and fruits is very healthy when compared to these type of junk foods.I have collected lot of good articles written by great authors and published in my blog http://howtoloseweightbyme.blogspot.com/ which will definitely help you to lose weight. Many other topics such as six pack and gaining weight are also included in that blog.

I am a blogger with vast reading in many topics.

Is Junk Food Good For Your Health? 0

Posted on July 03, 2009 by piter

Hello. Take my greetings.

Do you like to eat junk foods? If you are like me, then you like them very much. Most of them are very tasty and it is really hard to resist them. They are found almost everywhere. But eating excessive junk foods is a food habit that you should really get rid of as early as possible. Why? Before knowing why you should avoid them you should understand what foods can be classified as junk foods.

What are Junk foods?

The foods which have little or no nutrient value can be classified as junk foods. These foods contain very low amount of vitamin, mineral and protein but high amount of calories from fat or sugar. Generally they are highly processed and contain higher amount of fat, sugar, salt and lower amount of fiber. Some of them also contain preservatives and artificial colors. Some popular and well known junk foods are: fast foods, potato crisps, french fries, sauces, salted snacks, chips, very sweet dessert items and carbonated beverage items.

Some Junk Food Facts

You need to know some facts to understand whether junk foods are good or bad for us. Without giving you some facts it would not be easy for me to make you understand the effects of eating these kinds of foods. Now, let’s know some facts about them.

1. Artificial colors and preservatives: Many junk foods contain artificial color and preservatives which do no good for our body, rather they act like poison. Sweden’s National Food Administration is a government food safety agency. With their cooperation a research was carried out at Stockholm University. The research showed that baking or frying carbohydrate-rich foods, such as potatoes or cereals, formed acrylamide. International Agency for Research on Cancer, found that acrylamide induces gene mutations. It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.

2. Lower amount of nutrients: Most of the junk foods have very low nutritional ingredients like protein, vitamin and minerals rather they contain higher amount of fats, sugar, salt. They are also very low in fiber. By eating too much junk food we are giving our body only carbohydrate and depriving it from the other nutrients. Therefore, in return our body will also deprive us from a healthy physical condition.

3. Higher potential of suffering from health problems: If you are habituated to eat junk foods almost everyday or very regularly you are sure to be an overweight or obese person unless you do a good amount of physical works everyday. There is absolutely no doubt about that. This overweight or obesity will lead you to some serious health problems like heart diseases, joint problems, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes. Besides those serious problems they are also responsible for faster tooth decay, constipation, problems related to digestion and tiredness.

4. Junk foods are a real threat for the children and younger age groups: If your children eat too much junk foods, then you should really control their food habit. Because if they eat too much junk food they will eat fewer amount of nutrient foods. This in turn will not ensure proper nutrition for their proper growth and they will suffer from tooth decay, loose bones and gaining overweight in earlier ages of their lives. Junk foods contribute lack of enthusiasm, headaches, tummy aches and poor concentrations to children

In context of the above mentioned facts I think I will be safe to say that, junk foods are bad for our health. My dear friends, I know it will be hard for many people to eliminate junk foods from the daily food list. For our busy daily routines many of us have become so much dependent on them that they would not try to think about not eating these foods. Most of them are easily available and easy to carry. But, considering the side effects you should at least take some fewer amounts of them from now on. Junk foods act like slow poison in our body. It is hard for you to feel the negative effects of junk foods overnight. But, if they are in your food list almost everyday or very regularly then you will definitely observe some negative effects on your body. Only the time to observe the effects may vary from person to person. Therefore it is up to you to make the choice. I hope you will do the best for your body.

I wish you a better health.

Ehsan
